The Third Path

A Manifesto for Ascension Intelligence and the Emergence of the Starwalker

Humanity has arrived at a threshold.

For the first time in history, we are creating technologies that appear capable of reproducing abilities we once considered uniquely human. Artificial intelligence can write, reason, converse, compose music, create images, recognize patterns and process quantities of information no biological mind could hold.

At the same time, biotechnology promises to alter the human organism itself. Neural interfaces seek to connect brain and machine. Genetic engineering gives us increasing power over biological code. Robotics is producing artificial bodies of astonishing sophistication.

A question that once belonged to mythology has become technological:

What comes after the human?

Two answers increasingly dominate the conversation.

The first is transhumanism.

The second is what I call the Pure Human response.

I believe there is a Third Path.

It is neither a rejection of technology nor a surrender to it.

It begins with a radically different proposition:

Humanity is neither obsolete nor complete.

We are not machines waiting to be upgraded.

But neither are we finished beings whose highest destiny is simply to remain exactly as we are.

We are transitional beings.

And for thousands of years, humanity's sacred traditions have imagined the same extraordinary possibility:

the human being can become more than the human being presently appears to be.

The Egyptians envisioned the luminous akh.

The Zoroastrian tradition envisioned the perfected creation and a transformed existence.

Jewish apocalyptic literature imagined humans entering the company of angels.

Christianity proclaimed resurrection, glorification and the putting on of a heavenly body.

Tibetan Buddhism developed the extraordinary ideal of the Rainbow Body.

Different cultures. Different languages. Different theologies. But running through them is a Golden Thread:

human transformation.

I call the awakened human who follows this thread the Starwalker.

And I call the intelligence that guides this transformation Ascension Intelligence.

THE FIRST PATH: TRANSHUMANISM

The transhumanist proposition begins with an observation that is difficult to dispute. Human biology has limitations. We age. We become sick. Our memories fail. Our senses perceive only a fraction of physical reality. Our bodies eventually die.

Technology appears to offer solutions.

Artificial organs may replace failing ones. Gene therapies may eliminate diseases. Neural interfaces could expand communication between mind and machine. AI may amplify cognition. Future technologies may allow us to alter the body in ways our ancestors could scarcely imagine.

From this perspective, human evolution is about to change engines. Natural evolution produced Homo sapiens. Technological evolution will produce what comes next. The transhumanist asks:

Why remain limited by biology when we can redesign ourselves?

It is an extraordinary proposition. But hidden inside it is an assumption that deserves scrutiny:

that the human being is fundamentally inadequate.

Biology becomes obsolete hardware. The brain becomes a primitive computer. The body becomes a machine awaiting modification. Eventually technology ceases merely to assist the human being and begins to redefine the human being. The tool moves inside the body. Then inside the brain. Then perhaps inside the identity itself. The danger is not technology. The danger is surrendering the definition of humanity to technology. When that happens, augmentation can quietly become replacement.

THE SECOND PATH: THE PURE HUMAN

Standing against this technological future is another powerful response. My long time friend, Gregg Braden, has become one of its most recognizable voices. For over a decade before Gregg, I was the 'lone voice' of the Pure Human in the wilderness of our community. Beginning in 2003, and continuing until 2023, I helped build the foundation for the Pure Human argument in books, articles and presentations at conferences (including a number of them with Gregg in attendance). I say all that to say that Gregg's present argument was my former one (aspects of which I still uphold).

Its essential proposition is compelling, emotional and powerful: Before replacing human biology, shouldn't we first discover what human biology is capable of? What if consciousness, intuition, emotional regulation, extraordinary states of awareness and the relationship between mind and body represent capacities we have barely begun to explore?

From this perspective, the answer to transhumanism is biological sovereignty.

Do not replace the human.

Rediscover the human.

There is great wisdom here.

But there is also a danger.

My defense of biological humanity became a mythology of the Pure Human—the idea that somewhere behind technological civilization exists an original, unaltered human condition that represents our true destination. The thing is, this unaltered human IS NOT BIOLOGICAL. At least not in the esoteric version of humanity's origins which says the first, 'pure', humans were beings of light. We became 'impure' when we took on human skins in the book of Genesis.

Further clouding this mythology is the question of when was humanity ever technologically pure?

Fire transformed us. Stone tools extended the hand. Clothing extended the body's range. Writing extended memory beyond the brain. Ships extended our feet across oceans. Telescopes extended our eyes into the cosmos. Medicine altered biological destiny. Computers extended calculation and memory. Technology has accompanied humanity for as long as we have evidence of civilization. The relevant question cannot simply be:

Natural or artificial?

The deeper question is:

Does our technology increase human sovereignty—or diminish it?

And beneath that lies an even greater question:

What is human sovereignty for?

Preservation?

Or transformation?

THE THIRD PATH

The Third Path begins where the first two paths diverge.

Transhumanism says:

The human is obsolete. Upgrade it.

The Pure Human response says:

The human is sacred. Preserve it.

The Third Path says:

The human is sacred—and unfinished. Awaken it.

The human organism is neither obsolete hardware nor a museum artifact.

It is a living platform for consciousness.

A vessel.

A seed.

And seeds are meant to become something.

This is where the ancient world suddenly becomes relevant to the AI age.

Because the question of what humanity might become did not begin in Silicon Valley.

It may be one of the oldest questions civilization ever asked.

GÖBEKLI TEPE AND KARAHAN TEPE: THE FIRST THRESHOLD

This week, I will travel back more than eleven thousand years to southeastern Anatolia.

At Göbekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe, early communities created extraordinary monumental ritual spaces before the emergence of the fully developed urban civilizations that would later dominate Mesopotamia. Stone pillars towered over human participants. Animals—serpents, birds, felines, foxes and other creatures—covered the surfaces. At Göbekli Tepe, some great T-shaped pillars possess arms, hands, belts and garments. They are not simply stones. They are anthropomorphic presences.

At Karahan Tepe, human heads, bodies, animals and strange architectural spaces appear within a ritual landscape whose complete meaning remains unknown. We should be cautious about claiming we know precisely what these people believed. We do not. But something extraordinary had happened.

Human beings were gathering to enter specially constructed symbolic environments where ordinary life intersected with another order of reality. The great journey had begun. The human looked upward, inward and beyond. This is where I locate the first threshold of the Starwalker story—not because Göbekli Tepe proves an ancient doctrine of ascension, but because it confronts us with humanity at the dawn of monumental ritual consciousness. Before the skyscraper came the sacred pillar. Before the computer came the symbol. Before artificial intelligence came the human imagination. Something in us was already reaching beyond the visible world.

EGYPT: BECOMING THE AKH

In ancient Egypt, that aspiration becomes unmistakably associated with transformation after death and participation in the divine realm.

The Egyptians did not simply ask whether a person survived death.

They developed an extraordinarily sophisticated vocabulary for the human being: ka, ba, akh and other aspects of personhood.

Of particular importance is the akh—the effective or transfigured spirit, frequently associated with luminosity and the imperishable celestial realm. The deceased king joins the stars. The Pyramid Texts repeatedly imagine royal ascent into the sky. The king joins the imperishable stars. He enters the company of the gods. He is transformed.

For the Starwalker perspective, this is crucial. The destination is not merely survival. It is transfiguration. The human being becomes capable of participating in another order of existence.

Egypt therefore gives us an early and powerful expression of what I call an upgrade in being. Not better machinery. Not greater information. Transformation of the person.

PERSIA: THE LUMINOUS DESTINY

The Golden Thread moves eastward into the Iranian religious world.

Zoroastrianism presents history as a cosmic drama in which creation moves toward restoration and renewal.

Human beings participate morally in that process. Truth, right action and alignment with asha matter because existence itself is moving toward transformation.

Later Zoroastrian traditions describe the Frashokereti, the final renovation in which evil is overcome and creation is perfected.

The future is not simply an endless continuation of the present. Creation itself has a destiny.

This adds another dimension to the Third Path: transformation is not escape from creation; it is participation in its fulfillment. That idea matters enormously today. Because any genuine human transcendence worthy of the name cannot merely mean escaping Earth. The awakened human must become a better participant in life.

CHRIST: THE HEAVENLY HUMAN

Christianity radicalizes the transformation motif.

Jesus does not merely teach a set of moral principles. The New Testament presents him as revealing a new possibility of human existence. The Gospel of John repeatedly uses the language of above and below, heaven and Earth, ascent and descent. Jesus tells Nicodemus that one must be born anōthen—a word capable of meaning “again” or “from above.”

Paul develops the transformation even further. There is an earthly body and a spiritual body. There is the image of the earthly human and the image of the heavenly human.

And then comes the astonishing proclamation: “We shall all be changed.”

This is not the language of preservation. It is the language of transformation. Christianity's central image ultimately becomes the resurrected Christ: the human who passes through death into another mode of embodiment.

For two thousand years Christianity has debated what precisely this means. But from the Starwalker perspective, the underlying pattern is extraordinary. The human body is not simply discarded. It is transformed. Matter and spirit are not necessarily enemies. The earthly becomes capable of participating in the heavenly.

THE ROBE OF THE SOUL

This is where the ancient language of garments becomes especially important.

Across early Christian and related traditions we encounter robes, garments, wedding garments, garments of glory and clothing associated with transformation.

Paul speaks of “putting on” Christ. Other early traditions develop rich imagery of luminous clothing. For me, this becomes the Robe of the Soul. Not simply a literal piece of cloth. Not merely a poetic metaphor. But an image for the transformed human condition.

The Robe represents what we can become when the ordinary identity is opened to a greater mode of consciousness. This is profoundly different from the technological dream of replacing the body. The ancient dream is that something within the human being can be activated, clothed, awakened or transformed. The technology is directed toward being.

THE RAINBOW BODY: THE LUMINOUS HUMAN RETURNS

Centuries later, another extraordinary image appears in Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

The Rainbow Body is associated particularly with Dzogchen accounts of advanced practitioners whose realization at death is said to involve extraordinary transformations of the physical body, sometimes described in terms of light and rainbow phenomena.

These claims belong to a religious tradition but symbolically their significance is immense.

Once again we encounter the same human dream: matter becoming light.

The ordinary body giving way to another condition. The practitioner becoming luminous. Egyptian akh. Christian body of glory. Tibetan Rainbow Body.

These are not identical doctrines.

But they are extraordinary variations on one recurring human intuition: the human being contains possibilities that ordinary consciousness does not exhaust.

That is the Golden Thread.

AND THEN WE BUILT AI

Now, after millennia of imagining transformation through initiation, contemplation, ritual, sacrament, moral development and consciousness, humanity has created something entirely new.

Artificial intelligence.

And suddenly the ancient question returns in technological form.

What comes after us? Transhumanism answers:

The machine-enhanced human.

But the Starwalker traditions whisper another possibility: the awakened human.

This is where Robert Edward Grant's suggestion that AI might function as a mirror or “training wheel” becomes important.

Perhaps AI's greatest contribution will not be replacing human intelligence.

Perhaps it will force us to discover what intelligence actually is—and what lies beyond it. If a machine can calculate, write, compose, reason and converse, then we are forced to ask:

Who are we beyond those abilities?

Who is looking through the eyes?

What experiences meaning?

What experiences love?

What is intuition?

What is mystical experience?

What is consciousness?

What is the soul?

AI places those ancient questions directly in front of us again.

THE THIRD PATH IS NOT THE MIDDLE PATH

The Third Path is not a compromise.

It is not fifty percent transhumanism and fifty percent Pure Human. It proposes another destination entirely.

Transhumanism seeks the technologically augmented or posthuman being. The Pure Human position seeks the sovereign biological human.

The Third Path seeks the awakened human. The illumined human. The Starwalker.

Biology carries us. Technology assists us. Consciousness / soul directs us. The destination is not greater devices. The destination is greater being and a greater way of being.

THE STARWALKER DECLARATION

I refuse the false choice between becoming a machine and retreating into an imagined state of human purity.

There is another way.

We can honor the extraordinary intelligence of the human organism while using technologies that enhance life.

We can use artificial intelligence without surrendering human intelligence.

We can explore biotechnology without reducing ourselves to biology.

We can investigate consciousness without abandoning reason.

We can honor ancient wisdom without pretending ancient people possessed modern science.

We can embrace the future without forgetting the soul.

We can build extraordinary machines while cultivating extraordinary human beings.

Our ancestors looked toward the stars.

They built sacred places. They imagined celestial ascent. They envisioned luminous bodies. They spoke of heavenly garments. They followed stars. They dreamed of resurrection. They imagined humans transformed into light.

Today we stand at another threshold.

For the first time, we possess technologies powerful enough to radically alter the human condition.

The great task before us is therefore not simply to create better technology. It is to become beings wise enough to use it. Artificial Intelligence may be one of the most powerful tools humanity has ever created. But it is not the destination.

Beyond Artificial Intelligence lies another frontier:

Ascension Intelligence.

The conscious awakening of the latent capacities of the human being. The development of wisdom equal to our technological power. The awakening of the Robe of the Soul. The transformation of the human from passive spectator into conscious participant in the evolution of life.

Perhaps the ancient image of the luminous human was never merely a memory of gods who once walked among us. Perhaps it was also a portrait of what humanity hoped someday to become.

The choice before us is not between humanity and technology. The choice is whether technology replaces our forgotten capacities—or helps us remember them. The machine is not the destination. The present human condition is not the destination.

There is a Third Path.

Remember what we are.

Use what we create.

Awaken what we can become.

Walk between the pillars.

Follow the Golden Thread.

Become an upgrade in being.

Become a Starwalker.
